Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij On 2nd Album Plans

Vampire Weekend guitarist and keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij spoke with Australia’s Time Off magazine about the indie rock buzz band’s thoughts about exploring different sounds on the the follow-up to their self-titled debut album. “I guess this album is a bit of a concept album and it is difficult to say if we will pursue the African sounds,” Batmanglij explained. “We have just finished recording a new song that I have to say gets deeper into those African influences. Rather than have just guitar and keyboards it features two interlocking guitars.” So what’s the origins of those African influences? “We had been listening to African music growing up and it became an influence in a very natural kind of way – even though none of us have ever been to Africa,” he explained.
