Turisas’ Mathia Nygard: People Are Too Fussed Over Genres & Geography

Mathia Nygard and his Turisas bandmates

Turisas frontman Mathia Nygard appeared on Full Metal Jackie last month, where he talked about Paganfest, the routine of the band putting on their gear before a show, being inspired by fellow Finnish band Amorphis, mixing their Medieval characteristics in a world with iPhones and technology, and looking forward to returning to the U.S. after their tour wraps up.

“There’s always this sort of question whether band’s from Brazil can play metal based on that or Scandinavian themes or whatever and whether it’s believable or not and I think it’s not really about that,” Nygard explained. “People are a bit too fussed about whether some geographical location is entitled to do this or that kind of music or whatever and I think it’s more about a person, him or herself connected to and feels some sort of connections to and therefore I wouldn’t say Americans would be any further away from what we really write or think about than modern day Europe.”

Turisas Get A Great Reception On Tour In U.S. And Canada

Turisas in the desert

Olli Vänskä of Turisas checked in with fans at Guitar World for their latest tour blog while in Montreal for Paganfest earlier this month. “It’s great to be back in the U.S. and Canada! This is our first time headlining here, and it’s been really rewarding,” the violinist writes. “The audience reception has been great – Palladium in Worcester and Gramercy Theatre in New York City have both been sold out, and tonight is gonna be packed as well. We finally have a chance to play a full set too!”

Turisas To Headline PaganFest: America Part III After Ex Deo Drops Off Tour

Turisas band

Battle metallers Turisas will be heading back to North America this spring for Guitar World, Full Metal Jackie, and Metal Injection present: “PaganFest: America Part III”, their first-ever US headlining run! Joining the Finnish sextet on their triumphant return to the States is a gathering of bands from across the world: Scotland’s Alestorm, Russia’s Arkona, and the U.S. band Huntress. In regards to their departure from PaganFest, EX DEO’s Maurizio Iacono comments:

It is with deep disappointment that I am obliged to pull Ex Deo off this year’s PaganFest. We were all excited to play this festival and premier some new material, but unfortunately our new album ‘Caligvla’ has been delayed, and we need to finish it and make it perfect. Add to that, the Kataklysm DVD is also on its final production phase…We decided it would be best to concentrate on giving every bit of attention to the album you have been waiting for, and also for the Kataklysm documentary to kick major ass.

This being said, we will still perform with Ex Deo on the Montreal & Toronto shows with PaganFest, as we will be in studio in the area, closing up the album ‘Caligvla’. Everything else is cancelled for Ex Deo. We will return to support the album in the fall…

Word from Rome is that the plans are already in motion for world conquest! We ask our fans to support PaganFest and the great bands playing this year!

In conjunction with Guitar World, Full Metal Jackie, and Metal Injection, exclusive PaganFest contests and behind-the-scenes content from all the bands on this epic bill will be launched in the coming weeks.
