Absolute Radio’s Simon Mundie caught up with Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke backstage in their dressing room at Reading Festival 2009, just before their live set. They joked about everyone but the Gallagher brothers of Oasis liking the band, their fifth time playing the festival, preferring their own headlining shows to festivals “though both are good”, how their style has developed since the early days, going more organic with the next record, the ‘Flux’ music video and not watching their videos much, and what to expect from the Bloctober UK tour. Kele Okereke spoke with ITN about Bloc Party’s growing success, releasing single tracks, and the direction of the next album before heading out on to Reading Festival’s main stage over the weekend. “I have no idea what the next record will sound like,” Kele said. “A lot of sounds that are resonating with me right at the moment are kind of more organic warmer sounds. The last record was really synthetic in places and that was what we wanted, but this is how it works. You kind of veer between extremes. I wanted to make people really harsh synthetic multi track record, and we did with ‘Intimacy’ and now it feels like it’s time to get back to the sound of guitars, the sound of strings.” Watch the comments below.
Bloc Party broke the news that Oasis had cancelled their Rock en Seine performance on Friday night in Paris, France. Kele Okereke joked that “I guess we’re now headlining”, prompting some laughs from the crowd, who didn’t appear to care much about the news. Watch YouTube footage below.

Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke says that at its heart, the band’s third album ‘Intimacy’ is an account of his split with his last partner, and if he warned the other half of his break-up about the CD’s content. “I had to let the people know, because obviously the record’s coming out and it’s kind of a two-sided story,” Kele explained to Australia’s Time Off magazine. “I had to warn them because there are elements of the life that we shared that people would be able to recognize, and it wouldn’t be fair not to warn them. But I dunno, maybe that’s kind of the price; that’s what you must expect when you go out with a musician, that aspects of your life will become other people’s property.”
