Anberlin’s new single ‘Impossible’, ripping up Billboard’s Alternative Songs Chart, almost didn’t make it on the band’s upcoming fifth album, ‘Dark is the Way, Light Is a Place’, according to frontman Stephen Christian.
“Just a few weeks before the album was finished I hated (the song),” Christian confessed to Billboard.com. “I was like, ‘I don’t want that. I want that off the record.’ We had done so much to that song, I felt like it had lost its…allure, its luster. It had gotten lost in translation. But there were people who felt like the song had to stay, so we went back and rewrote the entire introduction with the guitar picking and added a lot of ethereal, low backup vocals, and we switched some parts around. Our A&R from Universal was there and he was like, ‘That’s your single!’… Greater minds prevailed. We were very lucky to go from, ‘Hey, get that song off the record, I never want to hear it again!’ to, ‘I guess America wants to hear this first, so that’s what’s going to happen.'”
Nathan Young and Christian McAlhaney of Anberlin talked with Fuse On Demand about their recording process of their latest album ‘Dark Is The Way, Light Is The Place’ and working with Grammy Award winning producer Brendan O’Brien on the project. “We never thought we’d do a record with someone like that, so it was just really cool,” Young said. “The opportunity, and it was so much fun. It probably was our favorite record to make for sure.” Watch the interview via YouTube below.
Anberlin frontman Stephen Christian spoke with Spin.com about the origin of the band’s name, which he credits to a misheard Radiohead lyric. “I was in my dorm room at the University of Central Florida in 2002, and I was listening to Radiohead’s Kid A,” Christian explained. “I was infatuated. I listened to that album every night for a month. But in the song ‘Everything In Its Right Place’, I thought I kept hearing something in the background that sounded like Thom Yorke was singing the word ‘Anberlin’.”
Anberlin are out with the music video to their new single ‘Impossible’, off the Winter Haven, Florida alternative rock band’s fifth studio album ‘Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place’, out September 21st on Universal Republic. Watch the Steve Hoover directed video via Vevo below.

Anberlin vocalist Stephen Christian spoke with GlobalShift about his organization Faceless International, which is helping lead an effort to rid the world of human trafficking. “Faceless International is fighting modern day slavery,” Christian said. “I understand that not everyone feels like that’s what they want to work on. I encourage people to just get involved. Human trafficking isn’t the fight for everyone.”
