I don’t care what anybody says… this is absolutely better than Skynyrd’s version…great vocals

  2. Scott Turner says:

Simple Man is one of my all-time favorite songs. A Mother sings to her son to stay a simple, uncomplicated man, as he leaves home to live the life of a Rock Star.

Shinedown absolutely butchers this beautiful song. It starts out okay. They guy has a strong voice. But about halfway through he gives up any attempt at storytelling or poetry and shrieks his way through the lyrics. His singing reminds me of Roseanne Barr singing the national anthem. This remake is so bad, I can only compare it to Faith Hill’s mauling of Janis Joplin classic, “Piece of my Heart”.

Wow!! Best performance ever!!!! I just love that song!

I wouldn’t go as far as to say it is better than Skynyrd’s, but it is good, if the vocals were a grittier, then it would be almost better than Skynyrd’s, with the original, you could hear the truth, and know that he experienced every word of the song, with this , you can tell the singer has only had a taste of life, but it is still a good cover

I think this is the song that really got everyone’s attention…i think if they didn’t cover this song they really wouldn’t have gotten where they are today…

Shinedown is the best ever and they make this song 5 times better period

  7. Jake says:

Chills your soul. They have out done the original and I can think of no higher praise. I believe Lynyrd would be proud.

Hears (misspelled on purpose:) the deal… It’s a great remake. Whether one prefers it over the original lies mostly in the critics age. My son chose this song for his Mother/Groom wedding dance. He’s a more hard rock/heavy metal fan vs. Southern Rock. As far as I’m concerned, either rendition would’ve worked as the words and the feelings behind them don’t change.

This band has incredible vocals and talent. I will not disrespect Lynyrd Skynyrd and say this version is better, but it is as good as the original. Skynyrd would be proud of the remake. I think the singer puts his own heart into this version, so it may sound a little different. This band has superstar talent and I hope they have the potential to dominate the rock scene for a very long time. As a 44-year old, I miss the classic hard rock bands that actually make more than a few albums and then just fade away. Shinedown’s “Second Chance” should be taking the country by storm – it is truly an awesome song, as well.

Absolutely breathtaking. Soulful, heartfelt, awe inspiring. I am a die hard Skynyrd fan and I am positive they are very proud. Wow!

  11. CyberMojo says:

I hate when a band does covers of other bands because they usually do a hack job of the original.

Except for this one! This blew me away the first time I heard it and I never can listen to it without my eye’s becoming a little glassy! It’s done with such emotions and soul. I think they really made the song their own and Skynyrd’s had got to be very proud! It’s a tribute to a great song!
This is on my top 25 song list of all time!

This is the song that my son & I danced to for the Groom/Mother dance. How beautiful! In no way was this song butchered & you did such a great job doing the storytelling. I think we probably lost it at “All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied”. Totally awesome

  13. Kerry says:

I freaking love the cover they’ve done, gets me every time his vocals, so powerful you can really hear him singing from the heart. I would so have this as my first dance if I got married one day!

  14. mackbone66 says:

Excellent remake! Reminds me of a simpler time that was almost forgotten. I could feel the passion in his voice. That’s what makes this song a classic!

  15. Austin Carter says:

    That was great song.

  16. Austin Carter says:

Ass kicking song. One the best songs ever.

This song is great. I would put in against the original and I’m a southern rock man this is a great band, not everyone today wants to hear older original versions of songs and Shinedown did a great job re-singing it

I have never commented on the internet- but-MAYBE- my son will see it. EVERY time I hear this I pray it for him. Derek I miss you and love you will of my HEART. I miss you FREDERICKS.

  19. Dave says:

Lynyrd????? (would be proud?) Are you kidding? You honestly think someone in the band’s name was Lynyrd? LOLOLOLOL I got an idea…hit the internet & research the originating band.

What a gorgeous cover of a classic song! I really love the lead singer’s soulful, gritty voice. Saw them live a few months ago and they blew me away. No fuss, no muss light shows or fancy stage setups. Just musicians playing music with great vocals. A step back in my opinion from a lot of the newer groups today.

    Shine On Shinedown!

  21. Kandi says:

Saw these guys in Omaha in June….awesome tribute to Paul Gray from Slipknot when they sang this you could have heard a pin drop in the Qwest Center totally beautiful!!!! RIP Paul keep your chin up Shawn life will move on!

  22. Jeremy Wozny says:

This is definitely one of the best songs I’ve ever heard! Lynyrd Skynyrd would be proud of the remake for sure!

  23. Bruce says:

Shinedown has passion in this song that brings it to a new level. Excellent Job!

  24. JP says:

first time I heard this version of the song was right after my mom died earlier this year. Not to take anything away from Skynyrd, but I like this version better.

  25. mike says:

This is a very good cover of the original. Shinedown has tried to make it their own but kept the essence of the original. All in all a different take on this song but also very good.

  26. carly says:

Beautiful, I was totally moved and the lead singer has one phenomenal voice, I too am a blast from the past (meaning) back in the day when the original tune surfaced from Lynyrd Skynyrd I was at my peek. So I too believe the Lynyrd Skynyrd band would be honored to see this incredible update. All the more power.

  27. Aaron says:

AWESOME song and video!! But I gotta question for you guys in the video is that supposed to be Van Zant’s ghost or something? And the picture the girl is holding up supposed to be Van Zant? I just didn’t really get the whole riding around the house with a light reflector and mysterious man thing. BUT LOVE THE REMAKE!! Could one of you explain the song?

  28. jake says:

What a butchering of a perfectly good song. Pushing the vocals on each word to try and make it sound better. They should have left well enough alone.

  29. Neil says:

I don’t understand why people get so mad about a band covering one of their favorite songs and claiming that they have “ruined” the original. Guess what…the original version still exists, so go listen to it if you like it better. A cover should never sound exactly like the original. If it did, then what would be the point of covering it? This is the way this Shinedown sounds and this is THEIR version of a great song.

    So beast
