Simple Man is one of my all-time favorite songs. A Mother sings to her son to stay a simple, uncomplicated man, as he leaves home to live the life of a Rock Star.
Shinedown absolutely butchers this beautiful song. It starts out okay. They guy has a strong voice. But about halfway through he gives up any attempt at storytelling or poetry and shreiks his way through the lyrics. His singing reminds me of Roseanne Barr singing the national anthem. This remake is so bad, I can only compare it to Faith Hill’s mauling of Janis Joplin classic, “Piece of my Heart”.

i wouldnt go as far as to say it is better than skynyrds, but it is good, if the vocals were a grittier, then it would be almost better than skynyrds, with the original, you could hear the truth, and know that he experienced every word of the song, with this , you can tell the singer has only had a taste of life, but it is still a good cover

I think this is the song that really got everyone’s attention…i think if they didn’t cover this song they really wouldn’t have gotten where they are today…

Chills your soul. They have out done the original and I can think of no higher praise. I believe Lynyrd would be proud.

Hears (mspeld on purpose:) the deal… It’s a great remake. Whether one prefers it over the original lies mostly in the critics age. My son chose this song for his Mother/Groom wedding dance. He’s a more hard rock/heavy metal fan vs. Southern Rock. As far as I’m concerned, either rendition would’ve worked as the words and the feelings behind them don’t change.

This band has incredible vocals and talent. I will not disrespect Lynyrd Skynyrd and say this version is better, but it is as good as the original. Skynyrd would be proud of the remake. I think the singer puts his own heart into this version, so it may sound a little different. This band has superstar talent and I hope they have the potential to dominate the rock scene for a very long time. As a 44-year old, I miss the classic hard rock bands that actually make more than a few albums and then just fade away. Shinedown’s “Second Chance” should be taking the country by storm – it is truly an awesome song, as well.

Absolutely breathtaking. Soulful, heartfelt, awe inspiring. I am a die hard Skynyrd fan and I am positive they are very proud. Wow!

I hate when a band does covers of other bands becuase they usally do a hack job of the orignial.
Except for this one! This blew me away the first time I heard it and I never can listen to it without my eye’s becoming a little glassy! It’s done with such emotions and soul. I think they really made the somg thier own and Skynyrd’s had got to be very proud! It’s a trubute to a great song!
This is on my top 25 song list of all time!

This is the song that my son & I danced to for the Groom/Mother dance. How beautiful! In no way was this song butchered & you did such a great job doing the storytelling. I think we probably lost it at “All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied”. Totally awesome

I freaking love the cover they’ve done, gets me every time his vocals, so powerful you can really hear him singing from the heart. I would so have this as my first dance if i got married one day!

Excellent remake! Reminds me of a simpler time that was almost forgotten. I could feel the passion in his voice. Thats what makes this song a classic!

What a gorgeous cover of a classic song! I really love the lead singer’s soulful, gritty voice. Saw them live a few months ago and they blew me away. No fuss, no muss light shows or fancy stage setups. Just musicians playing music with great vocals. A step back in my opinion from a lot of the newer groups today.
Shine On Shinedown!
