R.E.M. performed Tuesday night in front of a crowd of only 200 at the Georgia Theatre in Athens. Why so few people? Because the free film screening was to be followed by a music set from a local band called The Possibilities, but the members of R.E.M. shocked the crowd by joining the band onstage before performing their own set. It was the first show in their hometown since 1992.
