At a sold-out Metro on Monday, the Hives played at three speeds: fast, faster and frantic, according to Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune. Kot writes, “The beats don’t arrive on the two and four, but in finger-blistering succession that suggests a boxer machine-gunning jabs into a punching bag. This isn’t just exhilarating rock, it’s positively exhausting. Though the music suggests chaos is imminent, the arrangements are wired tight, with instruments moving in and out to create a constant tension-and-release, solo-free tug-of-war.” Chicagotribune.com has since removed the article.
