The Shins’ frontman and solitary songwriter James Mercer spoke with Australia’s Beat magazine and described the process penning the song ‘Australia’. “The track Australia on the new record wasn’t written about Australia, but it was written in Australia, and I love this country enough that I thought I’d name it after you,” Mercer explained. “It’s actually about working in a cubicle and the feeling that you’re wasting your life. And maybe you are. If you’re working for an insurance company, you know, you pretty much are. Not to criticize that line of work, specifically, but if you don’t really love your job you shouldn’t be doing it.”
