Brett Milano of the Boston Herald reviewed the Vines show at the Middle East on Wednesday night and was less than impressed with the buzz band. “The Vines aren’t a terrible band, but they’re nowhere close to living up to their hype,” Milano said. “Thanks to the punkish singles ‘Highly Evolved’ and ‘Outtatheway,’ they’re often lumped into a garage-rock movement with the Hives, Strokes and White Stripes. But unlike those bands, the Vines also write a lot of ballads, which sound like a play for Coldplay’s audience. Throw in Nicholls’ obvious Kurt Cobain fixation, and you’ve got a band that hasn’t found its direction yet.” Bostonherald.com has since removed the article.
