Detroit Scene Won’t Become Another Seattle

Dave Ferman of Knight Ridder reports that despite all this attention and good buzz with Detroit rock bands, most notably the White Stripes, observers aren’t worried about Detroit turning into the new Seattle, the next trendy scene everyone flocks to. This is partly because the city is simply not as charming a place to live as Seattle, and partly because, although many of the bands there sport stripped-down, garage-y touches, there is no signature ‘Detroit sound.’ “Detroit is a state of mind — there’s a different mentality there,” says Robert Matheu, editor of Creem, the groundbreaking Detroit-based magazine that is planning to relaunch this fall. “I think the bands know they can make a splash on their own terms.”
