David Lindquist of the Indianapolis Star spoke with Jeff Mayfield, director of charts at Billboard, on why he thinks Creed is so popular despite being almost universally hated by music critics. “They are not a critic’s cup of tea, but that’s often the case,” Billboard’s Mayfield says. “I’m rather used to things that the public likes not being things that appeal to critics. It’s happening now with a rock band, but it happened a few years ago with Michael Bolton. It’s not unusual to see that dichotomy where you don’t read a lot of positive press, yet the public loves the act.” Indystar.com has since removed the article.
