Avail vocalist and chief songwriter Tim Barry spoke with Australia’s Time Off magazine about a geographic influence uncommon for punk bands. “I think the South has always been an influence on us,” Barry explained. “I think it’s the upbringing too – we all grew up in Northern Virginia, which is now nothing but a sprawling suburb… People attribute the South to the Civil War and slavery and racism and all the negative things, but we think of it almost like Australia – where’s it’s a slower pace of life and people are friendly and the issues are the same issues that are dealt with all over the country. So of course that comes out in our music and there’s no doubt it always will.” The article at timeoff.com.au has since been removed.
