Joan Anderman of the Boston Globe profiled the rise in over-hyped bands, sparked recently by myspace.com and the monsterous success of the Arctic Monkeys in the UK. Topping the paper’s list of the most overhyped bands since the year 2000 were the Arctic Monkeys. Anderman writes, “Britain’s New Musical Express named the Arctic Monkeys album ‘Whatever People Say I am, That’s What I’m Not’ one of the Top 5 albums of all time. Top 5?!? Over-hyped is too weak a word apparently four kids who can’t even drink legally in the States, in their freshmen effort, have made a better album than bands like the Beatles and the Clash.” Others on the list included My Chemical Romance, The Vines, The Strokes, The Libertines, Morningwood, The Killers, Coldplay, The Streets… and Steven Seagal.
