Kevin McKeough of Metromix.com reviewed Alkaline Trio’s sold-out performance at the Riviera Thursday night. McKeough writes, “On their records, the band assembles razor-edge guitar hooks, pensive melodies, quiet interludes and roller-coaster shifts in momentum like an Alfred Hitchcock thriller, raising the tension and heightening the emotional impact of their tales of life, death and doomed love on the punk fringe. Most of these nuances were lost during the Alkaline Trio’s performance, though. With drummer Derek Grant driving the songs with tidal wave cymbal crashes and mortar fire snare volleys, Dan Andriano’s bass chugging like a freight train, and Matt Kiba playing buzzsaw guitar chords, there was plenty of velocity, but little variety to the stampeding songs.” Metromix.chicagotribune.com has since removed the article.
